The challenge
The business received a $92,000 proposed reassessment with 30 days to respond. The owners weren’t sure how to challenge the findings or which documents would support their position.
What we did
We reviewed the auditor’s findings line by line, identified unsupported adjustments, and prepared a written response backed by supporting records. We handled communication with the auditor and answered follow-up questions.
The outcome
CRA accepted the supporting evidence and withdrew the full $92,000 proposed reassessment.

What we did
We confirmed the balance, brought overdue filings up to date, and proposed a payment arrangement based on the business’s cash flow. We also submitted a separate request for penalty and interest relief.
The outcome
CRA accepted an initial payment arrangement of $2,500 per month and approved $4,800 in penalty and interest relief.

Questions

Everything you need to know before you book

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. It's a free 20-minute phone call with no obligation. If you'd like our help afterwards, you get a written scope and fee before any paid work starts.

Who will call me?

Parm Shergill, CPA, calls you himself at your booked time from 778-551-2532. Save the number so you recognize the call.

What should I have ready for the call?

Your CRA letter or notice, any deadline on it, and a note of anything you've already sent CRA. Please don't email your SIN or CRA login.

How long do I have to respond to CRA?

It depends on the letter. A proposal letter usually gives 30 days to respond. To object to a reassessment, businesses and GST/HST registrants generally have 90 days from the date of the notice; individuals have the later of 90 days or one year after their filing due date. We'll confirm your exact deadline on the call.

Can you help if I've already responded to CRA?

Yes. We review what was sent and where things stand. If CRA has already reassessed, we look at whether a notice of objection makes sense and the deadline for filing one.

Can you represent me with CRA?

Yes. Once you authorize us as your representative, we deal with CRA on your behalf: calls, letters, audit responses, proposal letters and objections. If a matter needs to go to the Tax Court, we'll tell you upfront.

Can you help with tax debt and collections?

Yes. We help set up payment arrangements with CRA and prepare requests for relief from penalties and interest. Relief requests can cover the past 10 calendar years.

Can you work with my existing accountant?

Yes. We can handle the CRA matter while your accountant continues your regular work, and coordinate with them where needed.

What does representation cost?

It depends on the matter. After the free call, you receive a written scope and fee before any paid work starts, so you know the cost upfront.

Can you guarantee a reduction?

No. No one can guarantee how CRA will decide. We challenge what the facts don't support and claim what you're entitled to, and you'll know your realistic options from the first call.

Do you work with businesses outside BC?

Yes, across Canada, by phone and online. In Quebec, GST/HST and QST matters are handled by Revenu Québec, which we don't currently take on.

Are you affiliated with CRA?

No. Brookside CPA is an independent CPA firm that works for you. Parm worked at CRA as a GST/HST auditor for 10 years before founding the firm.

You don't have to deal with CRA alone.
